Itinerary
We will meet at the airport at 4am for our direct flight to Ljubljana departing at 6am. On arrival at 8am, we will explore the town of Bled, known as the pearl of the Slovenian Alpine region. We shall visit Bled Castle (entrance extra), before proceeding to Bohinj, the largest glacier lake in Slovenia, situated in the region of the Julian Alps. You may opt to take a cable car (extra – weather permitting) up to Mount Vogel and admire the stupendous view till we reach the summit. We will then proceed to our 4-star Hotel Park and check-in.
Today we join in the full-day optional excursion by visiting Predjama Castle (entrance extra). Here, one can admire this structure that is built right in the mountains. We will later proceed to Postojna Caves (entrance extra), which are amongst the largest in the world with amazing stalactite and stalagmite structures. We enjoy the Living Nativity in the caves, a special show staged only on these festive days. An electric train will take us into the caves and then a guide will walk us through the most dramatic parts of the caves.
This morning, we will go on an optional full-day excursion to visit Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. We’ll see the baroque section, referred to by the locals at the “Old Town” nestled between the castle slopes and the river Ljubljana. Particular highlights of the Old Town include the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, City Hall, and the Three Bridges. The rest of the day is free to enjoy this beautiful city at leisure.
Today we go back in time on an optional full-day trip to Kamnik, where we’ll see one of the oldest towns in Slovenia surrounded by the Kamnik–Savinja Alps covered in snow. We take a cable car ride (extra – weather permitting) to the Velika Planina. The foggy lowland of Central Slovenia usually surprises us with sunshine and a true winter wonderland. It is the most easily accessible mountain to experience sledding, snowshoe walking, skiing, and other winter activities (fun and activities are extra and carried out at own risk) close to Ljubljana. In the evening, we will immerse ourselves in the New Year’s Eve celebrations by joining the gala dinner at the hotel. Afterwards, we can mingle with the crowd at the Bled promenade for the midnight fireworks.
Our full-day optional excursion today takes us to Kranjska Gora. Set near the borders with Austria and Italy, this winter and summer tourist resort touches Triglav National Park. This picturesque village still retains its identity (activities are extra) and it is fun to make use of the cable car up on the mountain (extra – weather permitting). We shall then make a stop at the beautiful Lake Jasna, located just 2km from Kranjska Gora. Lake Jasna is a stunning alpine lake with a breathtaking view of the high mountain peak as an amazing backdrop.
After we check-out of our rooms, we will make our way towards Skofja Loka, a picturesque medieval town where one can admire the picturesque bridge that crosses the Selska Sora river and takes you to the old town. The old town is a maze of narrow winding lanes that invites you to wander around. The highlight is the Loka Castle, which is worth walking up to it, to admire the beautiful panorama of the town and the surrounding mountains. Finally, we board our coach to the airport for our direct flight departing at 5.55pm and arriving in Malta at 7.55pm.
