Itinerary
We meet at the airport at 2.00pm for our Lufthansa flight to Buenos Aires via Frankfurt. The flight departs at 4.45pm and arrives in Frankfurt at 7.30pm. We then have our next flight which leaves at 9.40pm and arrives in Buenos Aires at 6.25am (30th September). On arrival, we are transferred to Hotel Grand Brizo Buenos Aires (or similar). After some rest, we have an orientation walk in the city with a guide (included). We visit Avenida de Mayo and continue south to Plaza de Mayo Square in the heart of the city. We carry on to San Telmo neighbourhood to visit Zanjon de Granados (included), a private house museum that walks you through the city’s history, with a tour of the underground tunnel network beneath the house. Afterwards, we can enjoy dinner (extra).
After breakfast, we start our city tour in Buenos Aires (included). We drive close to the Colon Theatre, one of the world's best known opera houses and the cultural pride of the "portenos" (as the inhabitants of Buenos Aires are called). We also see the famous Avenida de Mayo that runs into the Plaza De Mayo, surrounded by the Casa Rosada, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cabildo. We then continue to San Telmo, a historical neighbourhood and the eldest district of Buenos Aires. After driving by the famous Boca Stadium, we stop at La Boca for a walking tour on Caminito street, which is teeming with local painters and tango dancers. Later, we have dinner at a restaurant (included) and go to a tango house to enjoy a live tango show (included). Originally from the poorer districts and only danced by men, tango music included flutes, violins, and guitars. We return to the hotel around midnight.
After breakfast, we visit the northern area of the city, enjoying a guided tour of La Recoleta (included), one of the city's most glamorous spots that features upscale stores, restaurants, and boutiques. This residential area is also famous for its sculptures and French style buildings. We drive by many beautiful parks and see the Floralis Generica at United Nations Park, and the Libertador and Figueroa Alcorta Avenues. Then, we visit Recoleta Cemetery (included) to appreciate the ornate sculptures and mausoleums by famous artists. Many of Argentina’s national heroes, presidents, well-known writers, scientists and artists are buried here. We end the tour in Palermo, a district with beautiful parks and artificial lakes. We have some free time to visit the trendy neighbourhood of Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood. Later, we visit the first home of Diego Armando Maradona (included) and his family in Buenos Aires, in the neighbourhood of La Paternal and a few meters from the stadium that today bears his name. We return to our hotel and have dinner (extra).
After breakfast, we leave our hotel and make our way to San Isidro. In the colonial and aristocratic area, we admire the mansions and houses by the Río de la Plata. We continue the drive to Tigre, a popular weekend getaway for many "porteños" that has many summer homes as well as yacht and rowing clubs. Here, we take a 1 hour boat excursion (shared, included) along the Paraná Delta and its channels, rivers, streams, and numerous islands, appreciating the lush vegetation. After our cruise, we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (included) before driving back to Buenos Aires city. We can enjoy some free time for the rest of the day.
We have breakfast and then make our way to the airport for our flight to El Calafate, a pleasant village located on the southern shore of Lake Argentino, about 80km from Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site. Its strategic location between El Chalten and Torres del Paine in Chile make it a great stop for Patagonian explorers and travelers. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel, Hotel Kosten Aike (or similar).
After breakfast, we leave El Calafate and drive to the Los Glaciares National Park entrance (included). From here, we visit one of Argentina’s natural highlights: the Perito Moreno Glacier. The glacier is 30km long, 5km wide, and 60m high and it is one of the few glaciers in the world that still constantly advances. We walk along the boardwalks and stop at the different viewpoints to admire this breathtaking azure glacier. Lunch extra. Then, we embark at Bajo Las Sombras to get closer to the Perito Moreno Glacier. We take a 1-hour cruise (included) across Rico Lake on the southern arm of Argentino Lake and pass by icebergs that have fallen off the front of the Perito Moreno glacier’s southern wall. At the Icebergs Channel, we can appreciate spectacular and different views of the Perito Moreno Glacier’s high ice walls. With some luck, we might even see ice falling off the glacier and into the blue waters: a unique spectacle for photographers and nature lovers. Afterwards, we return to our hotel.
After breakfast, we depart from our hotel to Punta Bandera Port, where a comfortable boat (included) will be waiting to take us across the Argentino Lake towards the Upsala Glacier, one of the largest among the continental ices. We cross “Boca del Diablo”, the lake´s narrowest area and natural gateway to the Northern Canal, and head west. As the scenery turns into woods and high mountains with hanging glaciers, we find ourselves surrounded by enormous icebergs, proof of Upsala Glacier´s regression process. The boat continues then enters Spegazzini Canal, where we have a chance to disembark and enjoy a walk along Bahía de Todos los Glaciares to Spegazzini shelter, where you can have lunch (extra). Note that the several huge icebergs calved off from Upsala Glacier can form a wide barrier of ice which occasionally prevents the entry, approach and/or descent to certain points in the itinerary, which is checked daily due to safety reasons. It is recommended to wear warm clothing, waterproof jacket, gloves, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen for this excursion. Afterwards, we return to our hotel in El Calafate.
We have breakfast and later make our way to the airport for our next destination - Puerto Iguazu, a small, quiet town located at the confluence of the Iguazú and Paraná Rivers. Upon arrival, we proceed to the hotel in the Argentinean side: Hotel Mercure Iguazu (or similar).
After breakfast, we make our way to the Iguazú National Park in Argentina. From the visitor’s center, we take the train (included) and go to the Upper Circuit to appreciate the panoramic views of the falls. We arrive at the Devil’s Throat, the park’s most impressive and immense waterfalls. Measuring 150m long and 80m high, its horseshoe shape creates a stunning waterfall. From here, we walk along the Iguazú River canyon for about 3km to the lower circuit while we admire the regional fauna and flora and feel the constant presence of the waterfalls. Later, we return to our hotel.
We start with breakfast and then drive through the National Park until we reach the Brazilian side of the falls. From here, we walk along the paths and appreciate the lush vegetation, butterflies, and cascades, and enjoy the amazing views of the Devil’s Throat. We also appreciate incredible scenes that include other iconic sites in Argentina like the Two Sisters and Bozzeti waterfalls, the Superior Circuit, and San Martin Island, where the movie “The Mission” was filmed. Today, we also visit the Bird Park (included) near the Brazilian National Park. The sanctuary is home to over 500 species and aims to rehabilitate and release them back into nature. We walk along the paths in the subtropical forest, home to butterflies, alligators, snakes, and monkeys. Later, we return to our hotel. Note that for the border crossing into Brazil, you need your passports and visas (if required).
We start with breakfast and later we are transferred to Foz Do Iguaçu airport for our flight to Rio de Janeiro. Upon arrival, we make our way to Hotel Hilton Rio de Janeiro Copacabana (or similar). In the evening, we head downtown to the bohemian area of Lapa to enjoy Rio at night and have dinner (included). We visit Rio Scenarium (included), an old baronial town house with music, eclectic antiques, and a mix of vintage items like an old pharmacy from the 1930s, Chinese ceramics, and other unusual objects. This place is listed as one of the best bars/nightclubs in the world, where you can enjoy excellent live Brazilian music.
After breakfast, we drive through the Tijuca forest up the Corcovado Mountain. From the top of one of Rio de Janeiro’s most privileged belvederes, we can admire the well-known Christ the Redeemer statue and the stunning views of the city. Afterwards, we drive along the city’s beautiful beaches to the Urca district. From here, we take two glass cable cars (included) to appreciate the lush views surrounding the iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain. From the top, we can enjoy spectacular views of Rio de Janeiro. Later, we return to our hotel.
After breakfast, we have a walking tour (included) through Rio’s downtown narrow streets and old historical buildings. We see important landmarks like the Candelaria Church, the “Banco do Brasil” Cultural Center, Praça XV, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Selarón Steps, and more. Then, we drive to the Gamboa district near the port to the “Samba City”. At the “Acadêmicos da Grande Rio” warehouse, we learn about the famous Carnival parade and see where they assemble the floats. After a “caipirinha” tasting (included), we learn Afro and Samba beats during a percussion and dance workshop (included). Later, we return to our hotel.
After breakfast, we enjoy our last few hours in Brazil. We are then transferred to the airport for our flight back to Malta. Our flight leaves at 4.15pm and arrives in Frankfurt at 8.35am (14th October). Later, we have our final flight that departs at 1.30pm and arrives in Malta at 4.05pm.
