Itinerary
We meet at Malta International Airport at 5.00pm for our Turkish Airlines flight to Bogota. Our flight leaves at 7.45pm and arrives at Istanbul airport at 12.15am. We then board our flight to Bogota, leaving at 8.00am and arriving at 1.40pm (Friday). Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel in Bogota, Hotel Novotel Park 93 (or similar).
After breakfast, we are picked up from the hotel to start our tour in Bogota’s city centre. We visit La Concordia food market, where we walk through stalls filled with fruits, vegetables, herbs, fish, and more. Here, you can try different fruits and typical salty snacks like tamal and lechona. We continue our city tour in La Candelaria, a historical neighbourhood with cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and baroque churches. We visit the popular Gold Museum (entrance included) that contains over 34,000 gold pieces and bone, stone, ceramic, and textile artefacts belonging to Pre-Hispanic communities. We also enter the Botero Museum to appreciate the work of the Colombian painter and sculptor famous for the oversized characters. Note that this a city walking tour and the car will be available during the tour in case you need to rest. Afterwards, we take a short drive to Monserrate Hill and take the cable car to the top at an altitude of 3048 metres (included). Here, you can visit the iconic church and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Later, we return to our hotel and have dinner (extra).
After breakfast, we travel to Zipaquira or the ‘City of Salt’. Built in the 18th century, this historical city is surrounded by quaint cafes and restaurants. We journey about 180 metres underground to see the famous salt cathedral (entrance included). Built by miners, the cathedral has several small chapels and 14 stations interconnected with tunnels. Here, we learn about the history of the mines and appreciate art like a small Madonna statue designed by Daniel Rodriguez Moreno. We then continue to the village of Raquira, which is famous for its pottery. We walk through the colonial streets and browse the locals crafts. We finish our journey in Villa de Leyva, a laidback town with whitewashed buildings and colonial charm. We check in at Hotel Campanario de la Villa (or similar) and have dinner (extra). Note that the Salt Cathedral tour is not recommended for anyone who is claustrophobic.
After breakfast, we visit the Fossil Museum (entrance included) to admire a collection of marine and dinosaur fossils. The largest one, a Kronosaurus fossil, is about 110 to 115 million years old and measures about 7 metres in length. We then go to the Ecco Homo Convent (entrance included) that was founded by the Dominicans in 1620. Here, we can appreciate the beautiful garden and peaceful surroundings. Afterwards, we check out of the hotel and start the journey to San Gil, admiring lush scenery along the way. We stop at the charming town of San Gil and walk around the 300-year-old square. Then, we continue the drive to the colonial town of Barichara, which is characterised by whitewashed buildings with red roofs and a laidback bohemian lifestyle. Upon arrival, we check in at Hotel Mision Santa Barbara (or similar) and have dinner (extra).
After breakfast, we go for a walk along a colonial path to the village of Guane. As we walk down the mountain, we can admire the beautiful landscape that characterises the Santander province: the Suarez River, the Yariguies mountain range, and the small towns of Galan and La Fuente. In Guane, we can visit the paleontological museum and see an interesting collection of Guane and colonial relics as well as an indigenous mummy. We return to Barichara for the afternoon and have an evening at our leisure. Transport to Guane and back to Barichara is available for anyone who wishes not to do the walk.
After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and are transferred to the impressive Chicamocha Canyon. We start at the Panachi station and take the cable car to the other side of the canyon: Mesa de los Santos. We then have about two hours to relax, admire the view, and have some lunch (extra). We take the cable car back to the other side, and drive to the small town of Giron for a brief walking tour. Afterwards, we head to Bucaramanga airport for our flight to Armenia - a city in Colombia that forms part of the coffee region. Upon arrival, we are transferred to Hotel Hacienda El Percal (or similar) in Armenia.
We have breakfast and drive to Filandia, where we can walk along the small streets of the town and appreciate the traditional and colourful architecture, handicrafts, and lush surroundings. We then continue our tour to Cocora Valley, where we are welcomed with a traditional drink known as “canelazo”: a hot cinnamon beverage. We then start our walk along the ecological trail and admire Colombia’s national tree, the Palma de Cera, which can reach up to 60 metres. Afterwards, we drive to Salento, the oldest village in the region, and go on a walking tour to appreciate its colonial streets, artisan workshops, and colourful balconies. A welcome drink, water, and snacks are included on this day. We return to our hotel in Armenia and have dinner (extra).
After breakfast, we drive though the stunning verdant landscapes that define the coffee region. We go to a typical hacienda, where we learn about the intricacies of coffee: from seed planting and cherry ripening to harvesting and the careful selection of coffee cherries. We tour the plantations and learn more about coffee production and tasting. Later, we return to our hotel in Armenia and have dinner (extra).
After breakfast, we check out and are transferred to Medellin, which is known as “the City of Eternal Spring” because of its pleasant climate and lush surroundings. Along the way, you can admire stunning mountain scenery and there will be a stop for lunch (extra). We arrive in Medellin and check in at Hotel Diez (or similar).
We have breakfast and then start our Medellin city tour to learn about the remarkable transformations that it went through to become a bustling metropolis. In the Comuna 13 district, we experience one of the city’s newest transport inventions: the electric stairways. Here, we also learn about the way that art and hip hop revitalised one of the most dangerous areas into the city’s main tourist spot. We can then enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
After breakfast, we travel to the town of Guatape, renowned for its majestic colonial church and the vibrant colours of its houses. We then continue to El Penol Boulder, a gigantic 200-metre high monolith that dominates the area. If you wish, you can climb the 740 stairs to appreciate the panoramic views of the mountains and lakes. Afterwards, we take a short boat trip (included) on the Guatape dam and enjoy a traditional lunch (included).
After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and are transferred to Medellin airport for our flight to Cartagena. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel, Ghl Collection Hotel Armeria Real (or similar). We then enjoy a walking tour of Getsemani, the trendy neighbourhood of Cartagena, where vibrant street art meets colonial charm.
After breakfast, we have a city tour of Cartagena. We drive to La Popa Monastery (entrance included), located on the highest hill in Cartagena. We visit the monastery grounds, which include peaceful gardens and a small museum, and enjoy unparalleled views of the city. We then enter the San Felipe de Barajas Fortress (entrance included). Located in a strategic location on San Lazaro Hill, the Spanish started building the fortress in 1536 and expanded it in 1657. We learn about its tunnel system and walk along some of the tunnels. We then stroll through the cobblestone streets in the historic center of Cartagena. We end our tour at the San Pedro Claver Sanctuary (included). Originally founded by the Jesuits in the 17th century, the building has a three-storey stone facade with stained-glass windows and marble details. Inside, we can appreciate artefacts like religious art, pre-Colombia ceramics, and Afro-Caribbean paintings and masks. Later, we drive to the fishing village of La Boquilla, where we explore the tunnels of the dense ancient mangroves on dugout canoes (included). We meander through the canals, appreciating local fauna and flora, and glide out onto the calm expanse of the lake, where we might see flocks of herons and pelicans. After the boat tour, we have the unique opportunity to play Afro-Colombian drums in a one-hour workshop (included). We experience the vibrant Caribbean folk music, including Cumbia, Mapale, and Champeta.
After breakfast, we visit the Natural Park Corales del Rosario, an archipelago located some 100km off the Colombian coast. We take a motor vessel for about 45 minutes until we reach the Isla del Encanto hotel in Baru. Here, you can swim, snorkel, or simply relax on the beach. After lunch (included), we return to Cartagena.
After breakfast, we check out and are transferred to Cartagena airport for our flight to Bogota, leaving at 8.25am and arriving at 9.55am. Later, we board our Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul, leaving at 3.10pm and arriving at 3.30pm (on the 19th). Finally, we board our flight to Malta, which leaves at 6.15pm and arrives at 6.50pm.
