Itinerary
We will meet our tour leader at 5.00am for our KM Malta Airlines flight departing to Munich at 7.15am and arriving at 9.45am. Upon arrival, we will board our coach and depart for Prien am Chiemsee, a picturesque Bavarian town. From Prien, we will take a short boat ride (extra) across the beautiful Lake Chiemsee to Herreninsel, home of the magnificent Herrenchiemsee Palace (entrance extra), built by King Ludwig II and inspired by the Palace of Versailles. Here we will enjoy a guided visit of the lavish palace, and we will also have time to explore the King Ludwig II Museum and the Augustinian Monastery. After our return from the island, we will continue our journey to Bad Ischl, a charming spa town in Austria, where we will check in at our 4-star Stadthotel Goldenes Schiff in Bad Ischl.
We shall start our day by a familiarization walk in Bad Ischl. Bad Ischl combines imperial history, culture and natural beauty – a place that reflects the charm, style and lightness of the Salzkammergut. In the afternoon, we shall head for a half-day optional excursion to Hallstatt, the world-famous lakeside village and UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled between the mountains and Lake Hallstatt. Here, we shall enjoy some leisure time in Hallstatt village to wander through its charming Marktplatz, browse local shops, stroll along the lakeside promenade, or visit the unique Bone House (Beinhaus) beside the parish church, known for its centuries-old painted skulls. One may also opt to take a boat ride on the lake.
Today, we head to the beautiful Gosau Valley, surrounded by the mighty Dachstein mountains for an optional excursion. Our first stop will be the stunning Gosausee Lake, famous for its mirror-like reflections of the Dachstein Glacier—a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. We shall then head to the Dachstein Glacier, one of Austria’s most iconic natural wonders. Here, we will take the Dachstein cable car (extra) to the summit and visit the spectacular Dachstein Skywalk, a glass platform offering dizzying views over the Alps, and the fascinating Ice Palace, where stunning ice sculptures are carved within the glacier itself.
Today’s optional full-day excursion will take us to the charming lakeside village of St. Wolfgang, beautifully set on the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee. From here, we will board the famous Schafbergbahn Cogwheel Train (extra), one of Austria’s steepest cog railways, which climbs to the summit of Schafberg Mountain (Schafbergspitze). At the top, we will be rewarded with sweeping 360° alpine panoramas, offering magnificent views over the shimmering lakes of Mondsee, Wolfgangsee, Attersee, and the majestic Dachstein Alps. After some time to enjoy the breath-taking scenery and take photos, we will descend by train and continue with a short 30-minute drive to Lake Attersee, the largest lake in the Salzkammergut region.
After breakfast, we will head for a full-day optioanl excursion to Grünberg Mountain, located near the picturesque town of Gmunden. Here we will take the cable car (extra) up to the Grünberg Tree Top Walk, an impressive wooden path built high above the forest, offering breath-taking panoramic views of the Salzkammergut Alps and Lake Traunsee below. After enjoying this unique nature experience, we will continue with a short drive to Gmunden, a charming lakeside town famous for its ceramics and beautiful waterfront. One may opt to visit the romantic Schloss Ort (entrance extra), a fairy-tale castle set on a small island connected to the shore by a wooden bridge. In the late afternoon, we will stop at Traunkirchen, a picturesque village set on a peninsula that juts into Lake Traunsee, known for its scenic views and quaint charm.
Today’s half-day optional excursion will take us to the impressive Hohenwerfen Fortress (extra), dramatically perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Salzach Valley. This medieval castle offers a fascinating glimpse into Austria’s history, complete with towers, dungeons, and magnificent alpine views. A highlight of the visit is the Falconry Show, where skilled falconers present a thrilling demonstration of majestic birds of prey in flight against the mountain backdrop.
Following breakfast, we will head for an optional full-day excursion to Bad Reichenhall, a delightful spa town famous for its alpine salt traditions and peaceful atmosphere. We will enjoy a short visit before continuing to Berchtesgaden, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Bavarian Alps. Here, we may enjoy a walk through the historic centre or admire views of the nearby Watzmann Mountain.
We check-out of our rooms and make our way towards the Bavarian town of Rosenheim. This town offers an attractive pedestrian zone in the old city centre, mainly Max Josef Platz surrounded by arcades, cafes and centuries-old town houses. Free time for lunch (extra), and personal sightseeing. Later we make our way to Munich airport for our KM Malta Airlines flight departing at 5.10pm and arriving in Malta at 7.30pm.
