Itinerary
We will meet at the airport at 5.30am for our Ryanair flight departing at 7.55am and arriving in Thessaloniki Airport at 10.30am. Upon arrival, we drive to the city centre where we will meet the guide for a Panoramic Tour of Thessaloniki. During the sightseeing tour, we will have the opportunity to see the White Tower (the main landmark of the city), the Galerius Arch, the Rotonda monument, the Old Town (Ano Poli) and the City Walls, where you will be able to admire the marvelous view of Thessaloniki. Later, we check-in into our 4-star Capsis Hotel in Thessaloniki.
Today’s full-day optional excursion will take us to the world-famous Meteora Monasteries* (entrance extra), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meteora is a geological miracle, which one should see for himself to believe. Nowadays, only six monasteries are well preserved and four of them are still inhabited. We shall visit two of these fabulous monasteries, built high upon the steep rocks. Each monastery owns a vast richness of frescoes and icons. Afterwards, we will make our lunch break (extra) in Kalambaka. Return to the city of Thessaloniki. *For entering the monasteries of Meteora, appropriate clothing is required. Ladies must wear long skirts and must have long sleeves. Men are not allowed to wear shorts and have their shoulders uncovered.
Today, we will head for an optional full-day excursion towards Vergina or “Aegae” as per its ancient name, the first capital of Ancient Macedonia. We shall visit the Royal Tombs of Vergina (entrance extra), whereas one can seize the opportunity to get under the tumulus that covers impressive funerary monuments like the royal tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great and houses extraordinary golden treasures dated back to 4th B.C. After the visit, we will return to Thessaloniki for the rest of the city tour of Thessaloniki. You will spot the traditional architecture where one may visit the Paleochristian church of Saint Demetrios, the patron saint of the city and its catacombs.
Today’s full-day optional excursion will take us to the small port of Ouranoupolis. From this seaport, we will start our journey, sailing towards the south of the Athos Peninsula, until we reach the south limit, where the highest point is 2,033m. From here we shall sail north, along the western coast. You will be able to see from a close distance (from the boat) the mysterious and miraculous place which has been for centuries the center of Orthodoxy and you will find out new information about the history of Mount Athos and eight of its monasteries. After our return to the port, you will have free time for lunch (extra) while we will enjoy the amazing view towards Singitic Gulf, Athos, and Sithonia Peninsulas.
Today’s full-day optional excursion will take us to Dion, the religious center of the ancient Macedonians, dedicated to Olympian Zeus. It is located at the foothills of the famous Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the gods. In Dion, Alexander the Great offered rich sacrifices to the gods before departing on his legendary expedition to Asia. We shall have time to visit the archaeological site and the Museum (entrance extra). We continue to the traditional village of Litochoro. Free time for a stroll through the picturesque village and a walk in the Enipeas Valley on the lower slopes of the mountain.
We shall check-out from our hotel and board our coach to go to Thessaloniki Airport for our return Ryanair flight departing at 8.50am and arriving in Malta at 9.35am.
