We meet at the airport at 1.15pm for our Air Malta flight departing at 3.15pm and arriving in Lisbon Airport at 5.30pm. We then make our way to our 4 star VIP Executive Arts Hotel in Lisbon, located in front of Parque das Nacõe strategically placed in Lisbon’s modern part, for check-in.
We start our holiday with a half day optional excursion taking us round Lisbon with our local guide. We shall start with a panoramic tour stopping in the Belém district, home to the 16th century UNESCO World Heritage listed sites, the stunning Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery (extra). We shall also see the Monument to the Discoveries, the fifty metre tall monument, shaped like a ship’s prow built in honour of Henry the Navigator. We later can enjoy some free time to see Lisbon sparkle with Christmas lights and Christmas decorations, and discover the magical lights and the giant Christmas tree at Terreiro do Paço on the riverside. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the mouth-watering selection of Portuguese Christmas cakes and sweets!
We shall go for a full day optional excursion taking us to Fátima, one of the largest religious pilgrimage sites in the World. With the gorgeous white structure, unblemished and pure, Fatima is known as the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to three little shepherds. Since the apparitions the region of Fátima became a destination of pilgrims. Here we see the small Chapel of the Apparitions and visit the Basilica and Wax Museum (extra). We later visit Centro Comercial de Fátima, a shop where you will find all kinds of items and symbols of the Christian faith. Our last stop will be at Aljustrel and visit the houses of the three shepherd children.
Today, we shall have a half day optional excursion where we go on a journey to the Nature Park of Arrábida, home to striking landscapes, where we gaze over the verdant park towards the Atlantic and the beaches below. We then proceed to José Maria da Fonseca (included) and get to know the essence of a Wine Family with almost 200 years of history. We will also have the chance to visit the lovely gardens and taste two different types of wines. We later proceed to the most impressive Cristo Rei monument (extra), based on the awe-inspiring Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Here we enjoy panoramic vistas of Lisbon. In the evening we have dinner at the hotel and after one may choose to join the tour leader in the city centre to celebrate with the locals and welcome the New Year.
After a relaxing start to the day, we will go off for our full day optional excursion takuing us first to Mafra, mostly known for the sumptuous Palacio de Mafra (extra), inspired the Nobel Prize, Baltasar and Blimunda. After some free time we head to Ericeira, with its 40 beaches scattered along the coast of this fishing community. We finish off in Estoril, a stylish and fashionable Portuguese beach resort that is situated on the beautiful coastline that extends to the west of Lisbon. Estoril strikes the perfect balance between Portuguese charm and excellent tourist facilities, boasting fine restaurants, world-class hotels and the largest casino of the Iberian Peninsula, all of which provide Estoril with a prosperous atmosphere and a reputation for exclusivity.
We leave the hotel to go on our full day optional excursion with our local guide, heading first to Sintra. We shall be enchanted by its mystical hills and magnificent fairy-tale-like palaces. We continue to Cascais marina for lunch (extra) and some free time, and later proceed to “the end of the world”, for you to admire the picture-perfect Cabo da Roca cliffs. Surely a place where you will experience the true power of sightseeing!
Today we shall go for another full day optional excursion taking us first to one of the most picturesque and charming city of Óbidos. Óbidos is a charming medieval village made up of a labyrinth of cobblestoned streets with whitewashed houses that liven up with dashes of vivid yellow and blue paint. Walking inside the village also allows you to taste the local drink Ginjinha and other local goods and crafts. Next, it’s onto the fishing village of Nazaré, where old women still wear traditional skirts. The small fishing town has a grand breach, where one can enjoy classic Portuguese dishes, absorb panoramic views of Portugal’s rugged Atlantic coastline and capture numerous photographs. We make a short stop in Alcobaca, before we make our way back
This morning we check-out from our rooms and go on our last half day optional excursion visiting the lovely Palmela Castle. The castle, whose stones hold historic memories dating to pre-history, sits high up on the Serra de Arrábida hills, offering exquisite panoramic views of the region and the Tagus and Sado rivers. We then return to the hotel and make our way to Lisbon Airport for our Air Malta flight departing at 6.20pm and arriving in Malta at 10.20pm.
