We meet at the airport at 05.45am for our Air Malta flight departing at 07.40am and arriving in Amsterdam at 10.50am. Upon arrival we will be transferred to the city, enjoy some free time and later we have our transfer to the port to board the ship. Upon embarkation on the MS Johann Strauss we will be assigned our cabin and free time. The ship stays in Amsterdam for the night.

We enjoy our first day with breakfast while in Amsterdam. Today one can join the optional sightseeing tour which includes a canal cruise. Afterwards, the cruise leaves Amsterdam and crosses the Ijsselmeer. The next beautiful destination will be Hoorn, located 35km North of Amsterdam. During the optional walking tour, we explore the city centre which offers various historic buildings dating from the 17th century, numerous warehouses and shipyards, museums and shops. Continuation of the cruise through Ijsselmeer in the evening.

Wake up and enjoy breakfast on board. The ship sails upstream the Rhine River until it arrives in Dusseldorf in the early afternoon. Here we have an optional coach excursion that leads to the vibrant city of Cologne. During the sightseeing tour through the Old town, we see amongst others the Cathedral, the third largest in the world. Furthermore this is the most visited sight in Germany. In the meantime, the ship has moored in Cologne so that we can get onboard comfortably.

Today we wake up in Koblenz located on both banks of the Rhine where it is joined by the Moselle river. Koblenz - surrounded by four low mountain offers an abundance of cultural monuments and historic buildings, cosy lanes and narrow alleyways, squares with happy atmosphere and picturesque river promenades. In the morning one can join the optional coach excursion to the cold water geyser in Andernach. Back in Koblenz we continue with the excursion with a walking tour to the most important sights at the Old Town. After the ship has left Koblenz, we enjoy the most romantic part of the Middle Rhine and past Lorelei rock, steeped in legend. Late evening the MS Johann Strauss arrives in the charming town of Rudesheim.

Today we spend our day in the picturesque locality of Rudesheim, the German winemaking town in the Rhine gorge under Riesling vineyards. This small charming place attracts many tourists and guarding the banks are medieval castles inscribed in the UNESCO’s Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage site. The optional excursion today includes a trip on the mini train ‘Winzerexpress’ into the centre of the small town, a visit to ‘Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet’ and a walk down the famous Drosselgasse, lined with wine taverns. On the first Saturday of July, a coordinated boat trip and fireworks event is orgranised. Rhine in Flames is a convoy of 50 cruise ships journeys up the Rhine, and fireworks light up the night. The spectacle ends around midnight with a big final firework between Rudesheim and Bingen – an unforgettable experience !

This morning we arrive in Mannheim – a city in the southwestern part of Germany. Mannheim is unusual among German cities as its streets and avenues are laid out in a grid pattern. An optional excursion is offered today to one of the most beautiful cities in Germany – Heidelberg. The old town is idyllically located on Neckar and is the epitome of the German Romanticism. The next port of call is the emperor’s city of Speyer in the Rhineland-Palatinate. This is one of the oldest cities in Germany and during the optional excursion we walk through the Old Town to the Cathedral.

Strasbourg it is – early morning we arrive in the capital city of the rand Est region of France. Full day optional excursion by coach through the Alsace region. First we enjoy a city tour in Strasbourg located close to the border with Germany in the historic region of Alsace. Then by coach through the Alsace wine region of Colmar. The city enchants with half-timbered houses, the ‘Little Venice’ district and its churches. The excursion includes lunch in a restaurant and the reembarkation at the German harbour of Breisach.

Our final stop will be at Basel, a vibrant historic city nestled on the banks of the Rhine in Northern Switzerland with long history dating all the way back to the 5th century BCE. Disembarkation will be at around 9.00am, and then we make our way to Zurich where we enjoy a panoramic city tour of one of the richest and most sophisticated cities in the world.
